Staff Correspondent: Bus owners and workers have suspended long route bus services from Friday morning citing safety of the workers and vehicles due to the ongoing student movement demanding safe roads in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country.
Passengers are in difficult situation about the sudden decision. They are returning home from the bus stations.
The abrupt shutdown also stranded thousands of passengers on the roads.
“The bus services shut down as students were vandalising the buses,” said Khandaker Enayet Ullah, secretary general of the National Road Transport Owners Association of Bangladesh.
The strike is continuing until the government assures their security, he also said.
The transport workers took position on the roads and staged demonstrations in the city’s Saidabad, Gabtoli, Mohakhali and Jatrabari bus terminal areas on Friday morning demanding their safety.
Students came out to streets across the country following a Dhaka city road crash that killed 2 students on July 29.
