Bangladesh Women lose ODI series to Proteas

Sport Correspondent: South Africa National Women Cricket Team thrashed Bangladesh National Women Cricket Team in the fourth One Day International sealing the five-match series by 3-1 in Cox's Bazar on Wednesday.

 

The Proteas beat Bangladesh by 94 runs in the fourth ODI at Sheikh Kamal International Cricket Stadium.

 

Winning toss the visitors chose to bat first and scored 251 for 7 wickets. In reply, the hosts managed to score 157 all out in 50 overs.

 

 

Former Protea captain Mignon du Perez showed an excellent batting performance and scored 79 off 108 balls hitting 6 fours.

 

She also built a 74-run third wicket partnership with Chloe Tryon who scored 47 runs off only 54 smashing 7 fours. Besides, skipper Dane van Niekerk added unbeaten 26 off 19 and opener Lizelle Lee 28 runs of 18 balls.  

 

Bangladesh's Khadija Tul Kubra, the heroine of the last match victory, claimed 3 wickets for 48. Rumana Ahmed took 2 while Jahanara Alam one wicket.

 

 

Chasing a giant target of 252 runs, Bangladesh Women as usual started slow batting and loosing wickets in regular intervals. At one stage, they were 41/4. From there, Fargana Hoque and Salma Khatun made a 71-run partnership in the fifth wicket.

 

However, the partnership came off 21.3 overs at an average of 3.30 which denied Bangladesh to cope up with the required run rate.

 

Fargana smashed 67 off 144 balls hitting only 4 boundaries, her highest ODI score. Salma Khatun added 30 off 64 while Shaila Sharmin 15 off 11.

 

Bangladesh lost 10th wicket in the last delivery of the innings scoring 157.

 

 

With the victory, the visitors sealed the series by 3-1 as they won the first match by 86 runs and second match by 17 runs. However, the hosts fought back well and won the third match by 10 runs.  

 

South Africa's Mignon du Preez was awarded the 'Walton Player of the Match' prize for her outstanding batting. Chittagong City Corporation mayor AJM Nasir Uddin handed over the prize to the former Protea captain.

 

 

Uday Hakim, Operative Director (Creative & Publication), Walton Group and M A Awal Chowdhury, BCB Director and Chairman of its Women wing were present during the presentation.

The fifth and final match will be held at the same venue on 20th January.
