Quick execution of verdict required

A court in Narayanganj on Monday delivered its verdict in the sensational seven-murder case. The court of Narayanganj District Sessions Judge sentenced 26 people to death and nine other for seven to 17 years’ of imprisonment among the 35 accused. The entire nation is satisfied with the verdict while the plaintiff demanded the quick execution of the verdict.

People were in doubt about the fair trial of the cases as a local Awami League leader and some officials of a special force were involved in the murders. However, the doubts vanished away with the verdict pronounced after three years of the incident.

Seven people, including Narayanganj City Corporation panel mayor Nazrul Islam and senior lawyer Chandan Sarker, were abducted from the Dhaka-Narayanganj link road on April 27, 2014. Later, their bodies were found floating in the Shitalakkhya. Two cases were filed over the incident-- one by Nazrul's wife Selina Islam Beauty and the other by Chandan's son-in-law Bijoy Kumar Pal.

The way those seven people were killed along with the involvement of some officials of elite force RAB with the killings stunned the entire nation. The name of local Awami League leader Nur Hossain came out as the mastermind of the murders which made people very curious about the judgment of the cases.

However, the social and political status of the accused did not cast any effect in the investigation and trial proceedings of the cases. Though the accused were influential, the court, by delivering exemplary verdict, has proven that law is more powerful. The role played by the court in ensuring reign of law and fair trial by delivering exemplary punishment, is praiseworthy. This verdict will surely help to achieve people's trust on country's judiciary.

Meanwhile, Selina Islam Beauty, wife of slain Narayanganj city panel mayor Nazrul Islam, expressed her satisfaction over the verdict and wanted to see the quick execution of the verdict. Family members and relatives of other victims also demanded the same. The executions won't take place until High Court upholds the verdict of the lower court. We hope that the higher court will complete all procedures of the cases in quick process.

Taking initiatives is vital to start the hearing of the case once the documents of the verdict reach High Court from the lower court. The Attorney General has assured of starting the process after the verdict was delivered. We expect that it won't take much time to finish the trial proceedings of the lower court verdict. Ensuring punishment of the convicts in possible lowest time will comfort the relatives of the victims and the people of the country.

The state should be careful so that the relatives of the convicts are not able to influence trial proceedings. Besides, the activities of the members of various forces should be kept under surveillance. If anyone who works to maintain law and order gets involved in abhorrent crimes, then he or she must be given exemplary punishment so that none can dare to do such acts in future.
