RUET students go on strike against credit system

RU Correspondent: A section of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) students announced an indefinite strike demanding withdrawal of “33 credit system”.

The students of 2013-2014, 2014-2015, 2015-2016 sessions started their sit-in strike, boycotting classes and examinations, in front of Shahid Minar in the campus from 8:00am on Saturday.

They also submitted a memorandum to the university vice chancellor in the morning.

When asked, Vice Chancellor Prof Rafiqul Alam Beg said the system was introduced in 2013 for the students' own good and their demand for withdrawing it is illogical.

However, the students had not consulted him regarding the matter before starting the movement, says the VC.

“Decision on the next course of action will be made after a meeting of academic council”, he added.

Campus sources said the university authorities introduced the credit system according to which a student has to attain 33 credits, out of 40, during an academic session. Otherwise he or she will be dropped out of the year.
