Rangpur fire: Four more women die

Staff Correspondent, Rangpur: Four more women have died from burn injuries at the burn unit of Rangpur Medical College Hospital (RMCH) after trying to ward off the winter cold with a fire.

Jaminur Begum of Taraganj, Hasu Begum of Pirganj, Muktamoni and Afroza Khatun, 41 from Lalmonirhat died on Sunday night.

Earlier, two others women named Ruma Aktar, 60 and Akhi Aktar, 44 died on Saturday night under treatment in the hospital.

Assistant Professor Dr. Hamidul Sarkar of Rangpur Medical College Hospital burn unit, said that the victims were burned while stoking makeshift fires to ward off the cold.

Jaydul Islam, husband of a burn victim, said, "We are poor people. We could not manage warm clothes in the ongoing cold wave. We try to set fire for getting warm."
