A Rohingya drug smuggler was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) at Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar early Sunday.

The incident occurred in Shekolghera area of Jadimura, BGB-2 Commander Lt. Col Faisal Hasan Khan said.

The BGB commander said on information, a team of BGB men conducted a drive in the area. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the drug smuggler opened fire on them, forcing them to fire back, triggering the gunfight.

The bullet-hit youth was found lying on the ground after the gunfight, he said, adding that he was taken to Teknaf Health Complex where duty doctors referred him to Sadar Hospital. However, he was declared dead at the district hospital.

BGB also recovered 2,20,000 Yaba tablets, one gun and one bullet from the spot, he said.
