Satkhira man spends his last penny to build Shaheed Minar

Staff Correspondent: An aged man and his wife have built a Shaheed Minar spending their personal savings to spread the spirit of language martyrs.

The much talked Shaheed Minar has been built on the premises of HMS High School in Kheshra union under Tala upazila of the district.

Locals and students of the school have expressed gratitude towards Sudhir Kumar Roy, 85 and his wife Bela Rani for the special initiative.



It was known that over fifty years have been passed of establishing the school in the area but there was no Shaheed Minar. Teachers and students wanted a Shaheed Minar in the institution. However, there was no fruitful response from the concerned authority. And finally, the aged couple expressed their wish to build it. They started to save their every last penny for the construction of Shaheed Minar. At one stage, the couple had to seek help from their children in this regard.

Expressing thankfulness to Sudhir Roy and Bela Rani, Satkhira-1 constituency lawmaker Mostafa Lutfullah inaugurated the Shaheed Minar on February 20. 

Sottojit Roy, eldest son of Sudhir Kumar Roy said, "Tk two lakh have been spent to build the Shaheed Minar. It’s the first Shaheed Minar here in this locality. We hope people from all walks of life will offer floral wreaths here on the occasion of International Mother Language Day."
