Take action to prevent river erosion

The mighty Padma River is grabbing roads, houses, markets, school, hospitals and other land areas continuously. Everything is becoming vanished in front of eyes. People are destitute following the irreparable loss. The inhabitants of Naria Upazila in Shariatpur are facing the trouble most due to river erosion.

According to media reports, hundreds of house including three-four storied buildings went underwater following the severe erosion of Padma in Naria Upazila. As a result, many families became helpless. Around 3,500 families lost their shelters and agricultural lands in last one and half months river erosion in the upazila.

Newly made Naria Upazila Health Complex went vanished due to erosion. The roads, boundary wall of the health complex and mosque already have been gone in Padman River bed. The old health complex of the upazila is also under threat. A total of 350 business organizations, over hundred houses and bigger establishments washed away in last week. Over eight hundred trading farms of Mulfotganj Bazar are under threat of the severe erosion. Helpless people of the area are passing their lives under open sky in a measurable condition. Most of them are passing sleepless night there.

Besides, several areas in Fatehpur of Tangail, Charvadrasan of Faridpur, Goalanda of Rajbari, Kaunia of Rangpur have been destroyed. Even, two unions including Rabindra Kuthibari of Shilaidaha in Kushtia are also under threat. Debgram union of Goalanda upazila in Rajbari is going to vanish from the map following Padma erosion. Thousands bighas of crop land are now in the tummy of mighty river. Losing crop land and houses, hundreds of families are now in measurable condition.

There is an allegation that the river erosion turned into the serious condition due to lack of proper dredging or digging. Dwellers of the area appealed to the government to take steps as the Padma erosion was heading towards densely populated area. Although, a project worth thousand crore taka also got the approval in Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) but the dwellers lost everything before the action.

Not only the Padma but also the other rivers including Meghna and Jamuna are destroying township too. Though, the government is taking steps to prevent river erosion but the people of river bank are suffering due to lack of timely action.

The erosion and lose would increase if the authority don't take effective steps in this regard. The rivers of the country require capital dredging. But, there is no sign of such steps. Immediate action is must in this context. Besides, we need to stand beside the river erosion victims.

We expect the concerned authority will take proper action to prevent the erosion. We also hope that the authority will takes steps to provide financial support to the affected traders and rehabilitation of the victims.
