Take proper steps to implement decisions

A decision has been taken to introduce the combined system of admission test in all public universities. The education ministry has taken the decision in a high level meeting recently.

A high power committee also has been formed to make a roadmap in this regard and newly formed the committee has been asked to submit the report within next February 15. Undoubtedly, it’s a positive initiative.

Basically: The combined system of admission test issue was in discussion from last few days ago. Following the issue, there no effective initiative was taken yet to implement the matter. However, long-term discussion took place in this regard even the President expressed his interest. It is known, the issue was not highlighted due to disinterest of more than few universities. The reason behind their disinterest was- the huge income from the ongoing admission tests. Besides, some persons opposed the combined system of admission test due to admission and coaching-guide business.

It was seen that students buy admission forms from every university and join admission tests separately in the ongoing system. As a result, the students spend their time, labor and money which created an additional pressure on the students. They suffer from insecurity. But sufferings of students and guardians will be reduced if the combined admission test process is implemented. No one will be harassed. Besides, dishonest business will be discouraged. Combined admission test process will play an effective in  stopping question leakage and forgery in admission tests.

The combined system of admission test is ongoing in medical colleges only. Earlier, the combined test system was taken place in Khulna, Chittagong and Rajshahi (KUET, CUET and RUET) under Bangladesh Institute of Technology (BIT). Moreover, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology of Sylhet and Jessore Science and Technology University took the steps but the process was halted later.

Following the matter, Professor Abdul Mannan, chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) said the combined system of admission test will be launched in public universities primarily. Later, the similar process would be launched at private universities also. It’s a good decision indeed. It was expected that the process would be effective from next academic session. That means the upcoming HSC and equivalent students of would follow the system.

We welcome the combined admission process. The proper implementation of the matter is important now. We expect the concerned authorities will take immediate and proper steps to introduce combined admission test system. We also hope that the private universities will follow the same procedures in their admission tests.
