Staff Correspondent: Maj Gen Md Masud Rezwan, director general of the Department of Immigration and Passport, said BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman, who is currently living in the United Kingdom (UK), will not get new passport as he was convicted in criminal offence.
He said this in a press briefing at the Department of Immigration and Passport office at Agargaon in the capital on Thursday noon.
Masud Rezwan said, “I do not know if Tarique Rahman has applied for a new passport. But as per law, he will not get new passport if he applied for it as he was sentenced in criminal offence.”
“According to the law, any applicant who had been convicted for a criminal offence involving moral turpitude and sentenced to imprisonment for a term of not less than two years by any court in the past five years since the application date, will be disqualified for securing passport,” he added.
“Tarique Rahman left Bangladesh in 2008 when he held a hand-written passport,” he said.
Masud Rezwan said, “Tarique Rahman, while staying in London, extended his hand-written passport’s validity after it expired in 2010 through the Bangladesh High Commission. We came to know that he surrendered his passport in 2014. Now he is living in the UK without a Bangladeshi passport.”
