‘Those who boycott elections do not want democracy’

Awami League presidium member Syed Ashraful Islam

Staff Correspondent: Awami League presidium member Syed Ashraful Islam said, “Those who boycott elections in words do not want democracy and believe in it.”

The AL leader came up with the opinion while addressing a rally at Russel Square in the capital on Thursday.

Syed Ashraful Islam, also the Awami League`s former general secretary, said, “How many times has Awami League boycotted elections? There is no alternative to elections in the democratic state system. Khaleda Zia did not take part in the January 5 national elections. What has she got by skipping elections? What award has she got? She followed politics of killing people by not taking part in the elections.”

Syed Ashraful told BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to go to the field of elections and to the people to pull them towards her.

If the existing situation can be kept in the country, there will be no need for the caretaker government or the army force in future, the AL leader said.
