Time killing not expected over Rohingya repatriation

Myanmar government showed interest to take back their Rohingya citizens in Rakhine.

A joint working group will be made within November 30 to take Rohingya people back their home. The move came after a ministry level meeting of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal in Myanmar. Myanmar foreign minister gave consent to implement Kofi Annan Commission's recommendations. Bangladesh's Home Minister highlighted the importance of five-point proposal of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during the meeting.

Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal also met Aung San Suu Kyi and discussed over Rohingya crisis in Myanmar's capital Naypyidaw. During the meeting Suu Kyi said that her government is working to take back illegal intruders in Bangladesh from Myanmar. She also informed that the Myanmar government is working to implement Kofi Annan's recommendation.

Returning from Myanmar, the Home Minister said Myanmar is in positive position to solve Rohingya crisis. Bangladesh is now waiting for fruitful result from Myanmar side.

Of course Myanmar's assurance over Rohingya repatriation and implementation of Kofi Annan is positive. However, the Rohingya exodus is still underway after the violence in Rakhine. Now it’s time to see Myanmar authority's sincerity over their commitment in this regard.

In this situation, we think that international pressure should be continued side by side diplomatic efforts to solve Rohingya crisis.

The Rohingya people have been persecuted for decades in Rakhine of Myanmar. So, the international community should stay alert about Myanmar's step. Torture on Rohingyas is still underway although former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan recommended some steps to ensure Rohingya rights. That’s why Bangladesh government as well as international community should take harder steps to solve the crisis.

A major risk has been created in Bangladesh as more than ten lakh Rohingyas entered from Myanmar. Bangladesh is already facing trouble with its huge number of population. Besides, the huge number of Rohingyas created a threat to our food security and brought environmental disaster.

Rohingyas are Myanmar citizen and Bangladesh has no responsibility over Rohingya people. Bangladesh government provided shelter to Rohingya due to humanitarian issue. But, it is tough to bear the load of these huge numbers of people for long time. So, Myanmar must take back their nationals. There is no scope to show any excuse in this regard. Bangladesh government has to show strict attitude over the issue. The government should be alert so that Myanmar government cannot use the bilateral discussion and formation of joint working group as a scope of time killing.
