Trader attempted to kill by gouging out eyes

Madaripur Correspondent: Miscreants attempted to kill a betel leaf trader by gouging out his two eyes after abducting him from a Dhaka-bound launch in Barisal on Wednesday evening.

The trader was identified as Kabir Mridha, former member Banshgari Union Parishad and resident of village under Kalkini upazila of Madaripur.

Police rescued him from Gazaria village of Shariatpur, adjacent to Kalkini's Banshbari, around 10:30pm on Wednesday.

Family sources said Kabir Mridah started for Dhaka by a launch with betel leaf from Khaserhat of Kalkini. The launch stopped at Safipur ghat of Barisal's Muladi upazila for passengers around 7:00pm when miscreants of Sumon group abducted him.

Police of Barisal's Muladi, Shariatpur's Gosairhat and Madaripur's Kalikini started a drives to rescue him after family informed the matter to them, sources said.

At one stage, Kalkini police rescued Kabir from Gazaria village of Shariatpur, adjacent to Banshbari, while miscreants attempted to kill him by gouging out his two eyes, the sources added.

The miscreants managed to flee the scene sensing the presence of police.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Madaripur confirmed the news.

Kabir was firstly taken to Kalkini Upazila Health Complex. Later, he was referred to Dhaka for advanced treatment on Wednesday midnight.
