War crimes trial begins against 9 Mymensingh men

Staff Correspondent: The International Crimes Tribunal has ordered to start trial for nine men from Mymensingh framing charge against them for their committed crimes during the Liberation War in 1971.

The three-member Tribunal led by justice Md Shahinur Islam passed the order on Sunday.

The court also fixed September 11 for recording statement of the stateside in the case.

Prosecutor Abul Kalam stood for the state while Advocate Gazi M H Tanim moved for the accused. 

Earlier on June 19, the prosecution formally pressed eight charges against nine men including Md Abdus Salam.

The accused were involved in eight incidents of crimes where at least 101 people were killed, 13 people were injured, a woman was raped and over 100 houses were torched in Muktagachha and Kotwali police station area, according to the investigators.

Of the nine accused, six are being held in prison. They are- Mohammad Abdus Salam, 75, Suruj Ali Fakir, 62, Mohammad Joyenuddin, 60, Mohammad Abdur Rahim alias Nuru BSC, 67, Mohammad Jalaluddin, 59 and Mohammad Rostam Ali, 70.

The three others absconding accused are- Shamser Fakir, 66, Fazlul Haque, 59 and Shamsul Haque, 70.
