Asad Al Mamun: Waste materials from the slaughtered animals of Eid-ul-Azha now form the basis of a profitable business. Selling the waste items, traders are getting a huge amount of money.
Traders earned Tk170 crore in last year exporting the valuable items from the waste materials. Concerned traders are expecting the amount will cross Tk 200 crore this year.
After the Eid-ul-Azha festival, traders are passing a busy time to process the waste materials in capital's Hazaribagh and Kamrangirchar areas.
Bangladesh Meat Traders Association sources said that in the past, horns, testicles, fat, intestines of animals used to be thrown away. But, now these items are not waste now. These materials are being sent to Thailand, Myanmar, Japan and China. The reproductive organ of bulls is used to make delicious soup in these countries.
The organ is also used to manufacture medicines. In these countries, one reproductive organ, known in common language as penis, is sold for $ 8 to $ 10. The teeth of cattle are used to produce covers for capsules.
The businessmen now collect the wastes, process them and export them abroad. The discarded parts of sacrificed animals are collected by workers, who then take them to sell at particular spots. One kg of bones is around Tk. 3, testicles at Tk. 20-35 per kg, stomach at Tk. 120 and horns sell for Tk. 100.
M Alam, a trader in Hazaribagh said, "We used to do this business during Eid-ul-Azha. It's not a well-circulated business. However, we earn better profit. Collecting these waste materials, we sell these in markets. People visit us to buy these. There is no hassle to sell these items but the price is good."
