Senior Reporter: Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed has commented that Bangladesh now need not the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) status in the US market.
The commerce minister came up with the comment while talking to journalists after a meeting with Japanese ambassador to Bangladesh at the Secretariat on Wednesday.
The minister said, “Bangladesh is going to become a developing country. In this situation, we need not GSP facility. We do not want to get the GSP facility in the United States, we are not interested at all to take any initiative to review the US move on GSP”.
“We have fulfilled almost all the conditions set by the US but the country did not give the privilege to Bangladesh. Now, we do not want this facility. Bangladesh exports products worth 35 billion dollars all over the world. For being a developing country, many countries including the European Union will give us GSP plus facility. Talks are going on the issue”, Tofail said.
“The United States is not implementing many decisions of World Trade Organization (WTO) as a result it is being an ineffective one, “, the minister pointed out.
