Woman tortured in arbitration, 2 arrested

Cumilla Correspondent: A woman was brutally tortured in name of village arbitration at Daudkandi upazila in Cumilla.

The incident took place at Bekisatpara village of the upazila. The torture of the four-children mother was captured and the video footage went viral on Facebook which created resentment among people.

Police arrested two people in this connection after a case was filed with Daudkandi Model Police Station against five people.

The woman known as Asma Akter, wife of Kabir Hossain of the village who is staying abroad.

According to locals, on July 31, one Alam, resident of neighbouring village, was kept confined in Asma’s house over allegedly having extra marital status between them. They both were reportedly beaten by her husband’s brother Saiful, another brother’s wife Shilpi, local Babul, Mintu and Mostak, several times in the night.

On the following morning, an arbitration was held in presence of local UP chairman Monir Hossain Talukder. During the arbitration, they both were again beaten with bamboo sticks barbarously with the decision of neighbour Mintu Matabbor.

Asma’s sister Nargis Akter filed the case against five people. The accused are: Expatriate Kabir’s brother Saiful, Abul Hossain’s son Babul, Mobarak’s son Mintu, Barek’s son Mostak and Kabir’s sister-in-law Shilpi of the same village. Of them, Saiful and Babul were arrested while others went in hiding.

Local Barpara UP chairman Monir Talukder confirmed the news. He said, “The incident was a part of their family conspiracy. Kabir’s four brothers and their sister-in-law Shilpi made the conspiracy. During the arbitration, Kabir’s one brother suddenly instructed to beat them.

Later, with the help of locals he and three UP members rescued them and sent them for treatment, he added.

Alamgir Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Daudkandi Model Police Station, said that two the key accused were arrested. Others will be brought to the book soon.
