Aroma Dutta, Noorjahan get Begum Rokeya Padak

Desk Report: Two eminent women personalities-Aroma Dutta and Begum Noorjahan- have been awarded with Begum Rokeya Padak-2016 for their outstanding contribution to the society, development of the country and awakening women in the subcontinent.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina handed over the Padak to the two eminent women personalities at an award giving ceremony of Begum Rokeya Padak-2016 at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital, marking the Begum Rokeya Day.

The prime minister said, "Two persons receive the honour every year. But we want to honour those working for the development of women. From next year five persons will be given the award.”

“In every sector women are coming forward. All these are happening just for the influence of Begum Rokeya and our government is working for the development of women,” the premier said.

Women will have to go forward clutching their own rights. It is proved that women can go forward if they are given the chance, she added.

Begum Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain was born on December 9, 1880 at Pairaband village in Rangpur, and she passed away on December 9, 1932 in Kolkata.
