Due to the detection of coronavirus case in the country, BNP on Tuesday announced postponement of its countrywide demonstration scheduled for tomorrow (March 11), demanding release of party chief Khaleda Zia.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir came up with the announcement at a press conference at the party's Nayapaltan central office on Tuesday (March 10).
He said, “To prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19), we are postponing our countrywide demonstration scheduled for tomorrow, demanding release of party chief Khaleda Zia.”
He urged the party’s leaders and activists to stand by the people of the country.
The decision came two days after Bangladesh reported its first coronavirus cases. Health experts have urged people to avoid unnecessary mass gathering to prevent the spread of the virus, first reported in China’s Wuhan.
Earlier on Saturday, the party announced to stage countrywide demonstrations demanding release of Khaleda who has been in jail since February 8, 2018 after she was convicted in a corruption case.
