Bangladesh lost a dedicated politician: President

President M Abdul Hamid expressed deep shock at the demise of Awami League presidium member and former Health Minister Mohammed Nasim.

"Bangladesh has lost a dedicated politician at the death of Mohammed Nasim," the President said in a condolence message on Saturday (June 13).

Remembering his outstanding contribution to Bangladesh politics with due respect, the President said Mohammed Nasim was a fearless fighter in all the democratic movements of the country, including the freedom struggle and the War of Liberation.

He was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for five times as he was very popular leader of the people. The death of Nasim is really an irreparable loss for the national politics of Bangladesh,” the head of the state mentioned.

“The name of Mohammed Nasim will be immortalized in the political history of the country," he added.

The President said Mohammed Nasim, son of Captain M Mansur Ali, one of the four national leaders and very close associate of Bangabandhu, will be remembered by the nation forever for his contribution to the promotion of the spirit of Liberation War and development of the country, democracy, party and people.

The President prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.

Veteran politician and coordinator of the Awami League-led 14-party alliance Mohammed Nasim breathed his last 11:10 am on Saturday while undergoing treatment at Bangladesh Specialized Hospital in city’s Shyamoli area at the age of 72.

On June 1 last, Nasim was admitted to the hospital. Later at night, he was found coronavirus positive after testing sample.

He also suffered a stroke in the early hours of June 5 while being infected with the COVID-19.

The former minister underwent a surgery after his condition deteriorated following the stroke. Later, Nasim had been in a "deep coma" since June 5.

Born on April 2, 1948, Mohammed Nasim served as Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Minister of Home Affairs respectively during 2014–2019 and 1999–2001.

He is survived by wife, three sons, a host of relatives and admirers.
