Bangladesh observing Assam issue: Foreign Minister

Diplomatic Correspondent: Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said National Register of Citizens (NRC) will affect Bangladesh. We have nothing to say over the issue. However, we are observing the situation of Assam.

The Minister told this to the reporters after inaugurating Sheikh Kamal Memorial First Saarc Snooker Championship at Dhaka Club in the capital on Sunday.

Momen said, “India pledges that the Assam NRC will not affect Bangladesh. People who were excluded from NRC are not citizens of Bangladesh.”

The Minister further said, “India Minister of External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar visited Bangladesh several days ago. He did not discuss the Assam issue with us.”

The five-nation Sheikh Kamal Memorial First Saarc Snooker Championship is scheduled to kick off on Monday. The opening programme was held on Sunday.

Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka are taking part in the tournament.
