Bay Terminal will increase capacity of Ctg Port 3 folds

Staff Correspondent, Chittagong:  The new terminal named ‘Bay Terminal' on Patenga coastline with all modern port facilities will mobilize port activities and reduce transportation cost and also increase the capacity of Chittagong Sea Port  three folds.

The terminal is being constructed at a cost of Tk 21,000 and it will end in 2022.

Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) Chairman Rear Admiral Zulfikar Aziz said the Central Land Allocation Committee (CLAC) has approved the land for the Bay Terminal project. This is a prestigious project of Chattogram port to enhance the capacity of the port.

The works of Bay Terminal with all modern port facilities to mobilize port activities and reduce transportation cost is now progressing in full swing as the project is in the top priority list of Prime Minister, he said.

Sources said, the CPA is trying to complete the construction of Bay Terminal as soon as possible as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is monitoring the progress of the work for the said new terminal.

But big vessels carrying different kinds of cargoes including the cement clinkers, coals and food grains cannot berth at the port jetties as CPA allows ships with 190 metres length and 9.5 metres draft to berth at the jetties for unloading their cargoes.

Keeping this in view, the CPA is setting up the Bay Terminal to allow bigger ships to directly berth adjacent to estuary of the port.

CPA officials said, the bigger ships with more length and draft will be able to berth at the jetties of the terminal for handling goods. The new terminal would immensely reduce transportation cost and bring dynamism in port activities.
