Bernicat demands fair probe into Rohingya repression

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat

Staff Correspondent: US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat demanded a fair and independent investigation into the ongoing repression on Rohingya people in Myanmar.

She made the demand while addressing a view exchange meeting at Midas Centre at Dhanmondi in Dhaka on Monday afternoon.

Bernicat said, “We are stunned over the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar. We want to work with Bangladesh to put an end to the ongoing repression on Rohingya people in Myanmar.”

The US aambassador said Bangladesh government is intervening the matter very carefully and it is very positive that the Bangladesh government has urged the international community to come forward to resolve the issue.

“We don’t know what is actually happening there. A transparent and fair investigation into the matter is needed to put an end to the Rohingya crisis,” she said.

Asked about the formation of new Election Commission, Bernicat said, “It will be the first challenge to form a neutral, strong and non-partisan election commission in Bangladesh.”

Forming new election commission will be a hard job for the government to hold a free and fair national election, she added.

Diplomatic Association of Bangladesh (DCAB) organised the programme.

DCAB President Angur Nahar, General Secretary Pantha Rahman and other leaders were present at the programme.
