Construction works of Corona Hospital halts as protest erupts

Construction works of a hospital for novel coronavirus halted as protests erupted at Tejgaon industrial area in the capital on Saturday.

Akij Group, a business conglomerate of the country, announced to construct a 301-bed specialised hospital there amid growing concerns over the lack of logistics to detect and treat coronavirus patients.

Getting information over construction of the hospital, several hundreds of locals rushed to the site and staged protests on Saturday noon. They also chanted different slogans against the hospital construction.

Shafiullah Shafi, Councillor of Ward no 24 under Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), was also present during the protests.

Later, the authorities stopped the construction works in face of demonstration.

However, none of responsible officials of Akij Group agreed to talk over the issue.

Ali Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station, confirmed the news.

Now the situation is under control, he said.
