Death toll from Buriganga launch capsize rises to 30

The death toll from launch capsize in the river Buriganga has risen to 30.

"Bodies of at least 30 passengers have, so far, been rescued from the launch capsized in the river Buriganga. Of those rescued, 23 are male, five female and two children," said Rozina Islam, Duty Officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence Headquarters, on Monday (June 29).

Members of Fire Service, Coastguard and Navy are jointly conducting rescue operation to find the missing passengers, she added.

Hayat Ibne Siddique, an officer of media wing at the Coastguard, said "The rescued bodies have been kept in front of control room of the fire service and those will be handed over to their relatives from there."

Saleh Uddin, assistant director of fire service and civil defense, said, "It is 50 feet deep where the launch capsized. A rescue ship of BIWTA has started its move towards the spot to rescue the launch capsized."

A launch named Morning Bird carrying more than 50 passengers capsized in the river Buriganga around 10 am after it was hit by another launch Moyur-2.
