‘Drug peddler’ killed in Gazipur ‘gunfight’

A suspected drug peddler has been killed in a ‘gunfight’ with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Tongi area of Gazipur.
The deceased was identified as Jahangir Alam Pingku, 40, son of Abu Jafar at Gasairchar village under Faridganj upazila in Chandpur district. He used to live at Sattala Basti of Banani in the capital.
Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police of RAB-1 Kamruzzaman said acting on a tip off, a team of RAB conducted a drive in the area on Monday midnight. When the elite force reached there, the criminals opened fire on the law enforcers, forcing them to back fire in self defence that triggered a gunfight, he said.
After the gunfight, 4/5 drug dealers fled and RAB mebers recovered the bullet injured Jahangir and sent to Tongi Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital where duty doctor declared him dead, he added.
The law enforcers recovered two foreign-made pistols, 11 rounds of bullets and 1900 pieces of Yaba pills from the spot, Kamruzzaman said.
He also said that Jahangir was accused in 14 cases with different police stations.
