Education can be acquired throughout the life: President

Staff Correspondent, Gazipur: President Abdul Hamid said, "Education has beginning, but it has no end. It can be acquired throughout the life.”

The President made the opinion while addressing the 5th convocation of Bangladesh Open University (BOU) on its campus at Gazipur on Monday noon.

The purpose of higher education is not only to pursue a degree and good earnings in work-life rather to become an ideal human being where qualities including ethics and patriotism will be reflected, the President said.

In today`s world Open and Distance Learning have unveiled new horizon in acquiring knowledge, said the President, adding that the Open Education became accepted across the world using various system and technology to teach students.

"We`ve to build our universities as center of practicing knowledge without limiting their activities to book-based knowledge. I believe the country`s universities will turn their institutes into a complete centre of practicing knowledge and research remaining accountable to the country and the nation," he said.

“Bangladesh Open University has initiated a new chapter in the education system by providing scope to the students, who were deprived from education for various reasons and don`t have scope to study in the conventional system," the President added.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid, University Grants Commission (UGC) chairman Prof Abdul Mannan and BOU vice-chancellor Prof MA Mannan spoke on the occasion.

President and Chief Executive Officer of the Commonwealth of Learning Professor Asha Kanwar was present as the convocation speaker.
