Garment workers stage demo for wages in Mirpur

Blocking roads in Mirpur of the capital Dhaka, readymade garment workers are staging demonstration demanding their wages.

The agitating workers have allegedly vandalised several vehicles during the demonstration.

They have been demonstrating till filing the report on Tuesday (May 19) noon.

Police are working to bring the situation under control.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Kafrul Police Station Selimuzzaman confirmed the matter to risingbd.

"Workers went to the garments at first where they work to get their due wages and allowances as promised by the garment owners. Getting no wages, they took to the streets and started demonstrating in areas adjacent to Mirpur 10 and 13. We are trying to control the situation talking to the owners," the OC said.

Mizan, a worker at the Opex Garments, said, "Their owner is dilly-dallying in paying the wages of April and Eid bonus. They took to the streets get no wages and bonuses as promised to pay this morning."

Garment owners could not be reached for comment on the issue.
