Govt hiking power tariff to reach it every house: Quader

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader has said that the government has taken initiative to bring every family of the country under electricity coverage. For this, power tariff is being hiked at low rate to adjust relevant cost.

The Road Transport and Bridge Minister came up with the statement at a press briefing at Awami League President Sheikh Hasina’s political office in the capital’s Dhanmondi on Saturday.

Quader said, “The government is giving subsidy enough in sectors of power and water. So, the tariff is being hiked a little bit to meet the cost. Even after hiking the tariff, the government has to give subsidy Tk 3.5 thousand crore in the two sectors.” 

“On Mujib Year, the government has aimed to reach electricity to every house and ensure 100 per cent electricity supply,” he added.

He said, “Tariff is being hiked at 5 percent in village while 8 percent in urban areas. The tariff for farmers are being kept at the lowest part. I request people to accept the tariff.”
