Govt set to approve 5 more public universities

The government is going to approve five more new public universities those include two agricultural universities in Natore.

The Education Ministry has asked University Grant Commission (UGC) for its opinion over the matter to approve the universities on emergency basis.

It was learnt from UGC, the new public universities include Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University in Narayangaj, Dr Wazed Ali agricultural university at Sadar upazila in Natore, another agricultural university at Singra upazila in Natore, agricultural university at Gangni upazila in Meherpur and another agricultural university in electoral area of State Minister for the Public Administration Ministry in Mehrpur.

Currently, a total of 46 public universities are continuing academic activities across the country. Three more universities have already got approval, but not yet start academic activities.

UGS said new universities are being approved due to shortage of seats in public universities. Every district of the country will get a university gradually. However, there is no relation between university approval and the unemployment rate and quality of education.
