'Health guidelines must follow if markets, shops reopened'

Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said markets and shops can be reopened as per the zones following health guidelines.

But the shops located near roads cannot be opened, he cited.

The minister made the disclosure while talking to reporters on the steps taken by the ministry regarding the coronavirus outbreak on Thursday (May 7).

"Owners showing no interest to reopen shops can keep those closed. Reopening market is not mandatory and there is no rigidity in this regard," Tipu Munshi said.

"We are considering reopening markets zone-wise so that people are not needed to go outside or very far. For this, Dhaka city will be split into several zones. But people must follow health guidelines," the minister said.

On Monday (May 4), the government announced that it will allow shops and shopping malls to remain open till 4:00pm every day, from May 10, maintaining health guidelines considering Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr.
