International Desk: As many as 24 people were killed overnight due to rain-related accidents in Mumbai and Thane as the city witnessed massive rainfall in the 48 hours.
As a precautionary measure, the Maharashtra government has declared a public holiday on July 2 (Tuesday).
In a late night order, the municipal commissioner announced that all the schools and colleges will remain shut on Tuesday.
At least 34 people were killed after a compound wall collapsed in Malad area here on Tuesday due to heavy rains, NDRF officials said.
The incident happened around 2 am when the compound wall in Pimpripada of Malad east area collapsed and people living in shanties adjacent to wall got trapped under the debris.
NDRF officials said the deceased were living in the slums.
"Our team of National Disaster Response Force along with sniffer dog reached the site of the incident immediately after receiving the information. Besides, a team of fire brigade and local police also reached the spot and took the control of the situation," a senior NDRF official said.
At least three people were killed and one injured after a wall of a school collapsed in Kalyan on Tuesday. Wall of National Urdu School in Kalyan fell on the nearby hutments killing three persons.
Meanwhile, six labourers were killed and at least two injured after a wall collapsed on their makeshift shelters in Ambegaon area in Pune. According to the fire brigade officials, the incident occurred near Sinhgad College campus on Monday night.
"As per information, the wall collapsed on the makeshift shelters of labourers in which six people died and two-three others were injured," an official said.
