Holy Ashura a symbol of sacrifice and mourning

Today is the 10th day of the month of Muharram. The day is regarded as holy Ashura. The holy Ashura is observed on this day across the country with due religious solemnity and fervour commemorating the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hossain Ibn Ali (RA), a grandson of Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

On this day in the Hijri year of 61, Hazrat Imam along with his family members and 72 followers embraced martyrdom in the hands of soldiers of Yazid at Karbala desert for the supremacy of justice and righteousness.

The day of Ashura is marked by Muslims as a whole in commemoration of the martyrdom of Hossain at Karbala Maidan in Iraq. The day is observed as a symbol of ‘sacrifice and mourning.’

The holy Ashura is a significant as well as a day of mourning for the Muslim Ummah for establishing truth and justice. The message of Ashura inspires us to be vocal against injustice and repression as well as encourages us to follow a fair and true path. The great teaching of the holy Ashura should be reflected in our lives.

Muslims on this fateful day vent remorse for the tragic incident through various programmes. Different political, socio-cultural and religious organisations chalk out various programmes to observe the day in a befitting manner. Taking out Tazia processions by Shia community mourners marking the day is one of the main features of Ashura. The programmes include procession, Quran-Khwani, Milad Mahfil, fasting, special prayer. The affluent class of society arranges food distribution among the destitute.

This year the members of law enforcement agencies were on high alert to avert any untoward incident on the occasion as the Tazia procession of the Shia Muslims last year in Hoseni Dalan area in the Old Dhaka city came under a terrorist attack.

The supreme sacrifice of Hazrat Imam Hossain ® will remain as an example for all Muslims to follow for establishing truth and justice. We have to reflect the teachings of holy Ashura in establishing truth and justice in the national life by standing against unfairness and injustice.
