Indian Punjabi singer Dharampreet commits suicide

Risingbd Desk: Popular Indian Punjabi singer Dharampreet, 40, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan on late Sunday night.

Reports suggest that the singer was going through a rough patch and was battling depression for quite some time.  

Popular in Punjab’s Malwa region and known for his sad songs, Dharampreet lived at Bharat Nagar in Bhatinda. Of the 26 music albums of his, most of them were huge hits among the listeners.

He was with his mother at his home when he took the extreme step. Her wife and son have gone to her parents’ house for summer vacations.

Dharampreet’s mother, reportedly, knocked at his door and when no reply came, she got the neighbours to break it open. He was found hanging from the ceiling fan. The singer, who started his career in 1993, had very little work for the past year and a half.

Neither was there a suicide note, nor did the police receive any complaint. An FIR under section 174 of the IPC was lodged and the body had been handed over to the family after post-mortem.
