Bangladesh Nationalist Party Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who was released from Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University prison cell recently, was in home quarantine at her Gulshan residence for 14 days that ended on Thursday.
But Khaleda Zia has decided to continue her home quarantine as the country’s coronavirus situation has not improved.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told the media over mobile phone on Thursday.
Khaleda was put in quarantine under the care of her personal physicians and nurses, said BNP vice-chairman Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, a member of the medical board formed for her treatment, said.
Khaleda Zia is 75 years old and is suffering from various diseases, including asthma, which increases risk of coronavirus infection.
Zahid, also former president of pro-BNP physicians’ organisation Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh, said that Khaleda’s eldest daughter-in-law Zubaida Rahman had been coordinating the treatment of her.
Khaleda has been in prison since February 2018 after she was sentenced to a total of 17 years in two graft cases involving Zia Orphanage Trust and Zia Charitable Trust.
She was initially kept at Old Dhaka’s abandoned central prison, but later on Apr 1, 2019 she was moved to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University for treatment.
