Youth accused in 13 cases killed in ‘gunfight’

A youth accused in over 13 cases has been killed in an alleged shootout with police at Sonaimuri in Noakhali district.

The gunfight occurred on Saturday night at Podipara village under Amishapara union of the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Ratan Mia (32), who was accused in 13 cases of murder, robbery and thievery. He was the son of Rahmat Ullah at Mahtabpur village under Sonapur union of the upazila.

Officer-in-Charge of Sonaimuri Thana Abdus Samad said police arrested Ratan Mia on Saturday afternoon. As per his confessional statement he was taken to the area for arms haul. When they reached there, his associates opened fire on the law enforcers, forcing them to fire back in self defence, triggering a gunfight.

Police recovered bullet-hit Ratan Mia and took him to Noakhali Sadar Hospital where duty doctors declared him dead, he added.
