Mohammed Nasim laid to eternal rest beside mother

Awami League presidium member and former Health Minister Mohammed Nasim was laid to eternal rest at the Banani graveyard beside his mother's grave in the capital on Sunday (June 14) morning.

His first namaz-e-janaza was held after 9:30am at Sobhanbagh Jame Mosque in Dhanmondi and second namaz-e-janaza around 10:20am at Banani Jam-e-mosque in the capital.

A good number of people, including cabinet members, leaders and activists of Awami League and other parties, attended the funeral prayer maintaining physical distance amid coronavirus infection threat.

After the funeral prayer, he was also given a guard of honour by a team of Bangladesh Police.

Later, on behalf of President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, their military secretaries paid tributes to the five-time lawmaker.

Central leaders of the ruling Awami League and its affiliated organizations and other parties also paid tributes to the veteran politician.

Nasim, son of Shaheed Captain M Mansur Ali, one of the organisers of the Liberation War of Bangladesh and a close associate of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, breathed his last at Bangladesh Specialised Hospital in the capital on Saturday. He was 72.

Tributes and condolences poured in after the demise of veteran politician and Awami League presidium member.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed their profound shock at the demise of the veteran politician.

Describing his death as an irreparable loss for the nation, the President said in a condolence message, "He was a fearless fighter in the country's struggle of independence and Liberation War. Being elected an MP for five times showed he was loved by the people."

In her condolence message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh has lost a patriot and a leader of mass of people at his death. "I've lost a trusted co-fighter," she said.

On June 1 last, veteran politician and coordinator of the Awami League-led 14-party alliance Mohammed Nasim was admitted to the Bangladesh Specialised Hospital with COVID-19 symptoms, including fever and cold. Later at night, he was found coronavirus positive after testing sample.

He also suffered a stroke in the early hours of June 5.

The former minister underwent a surgery after his condition deteriorated following the stroke. Later, Nasim had been in a "deep coma" since June 5.

Born on April 2, 1948, Mohammed Nasim served as Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Minister of Home Affairs respectively during 2014–2019 and 1999–2001.

He is survived by wife, three sons, a host of relatives and admirers.
