No bar to removing illegal structures along Karnaphuli

Staff Correspondent: The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has upheld the High Court stay order on the eviction illegal structures built on the banks of Karnaphuli River in Chittagong.

The apex court also issued the order on Monday scraping the appeal of Karnaphuli Ship Builders.

Following the order, there is no legal bar to remove the structures built on the banks of the river, said writ petitioner’s lawyer.

Barrister Fazle Nur Tapash and AM Amin Uddin moved for Karnaphuli Ship Builders while lawyer Manzil Morshed stood for the writ petitioner.

In 2010, Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB) filed a writ petition to have illegal establishments along Karnaphuli removed. The High Court later issued a rule and an 11-point directive.
