One killed as jute mill workers clash with cops

A clash between jute mill workers demanding  arrears and police took place in Dinajpur's Birol upazila last night (March 25), leaving one worker dead and 10 to 12 others injured.

Sheikh Nasim Habib, officer-in-charge (OC) of Birol Police Station, confirmed the matter to risingbd.

The deceased was identified as Surat Ali (36), son of Mohammad Ali of Hosna village in the upazila. He was a tea-vendor working near the Rupali Bangla Jute Mill in the upazila.

Citing locals, the OC told risingbd that workers started demonstration on Wednesday evening demanding three weeks' wages. Mill's managing director M Abdul Latif tried to calm the workers.

Being agitated, workers along with locals started to vandalise the mill, the police official added.

When workers tried to attack law enforcers, police charged batons and fired teargas canisters and several rounds of rubber bullets in self-defense, leaving Surat Ali dead, the OC said.

Later, he was sent to Dinajpur M. Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy, he added.
