PM hints at abandoning Sonadia deep sea port

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday hinted at abandoning Sonadia deep sea port in Maheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar.

The Prime Minister came up with clue while addressing a discussion with ministers and secretaries at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.

Planning minister M A Mannan briefed reporters after the meeting.

The minister said, “Discussions have been place about Sonadia. It’s a beautiful place. We will decide in future about it. The main issue is – Sonadia will be kept safe.”

Finance division member (senior secretary) Shamsul Alam said, the biodiversity of Sonadia Island is extremely rich. Deep sea port may hamper the ecosystem. That’s why a tourist spot would be built there.
