President Abdul Hamid has rejected the clemency plea of death row killer of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
According to Bangabhaban sources, President Abdul Hamid rejected Majed’s plea on Wednesday night, hours after the convict filed the petition.
Earlier, Captain (sacked) Abdul Majed sought the clemency through jail authorities on Wednesday, after a Dhaka court issued a death warrant for dismissed army captain Abdul Majed, one of the six absconding death-row convicts in the Bangabandhu killing case, paving the way for his execution.
Dhaka District and Sessions Judge Md Helal Chowdhury issued the death warrant after Mazed was taken to the court.
Mazed was arrested in Mirpur area on Tuesday, four decades after the murder.
Abdul Mazed, a key fugitive convict in the killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was sent to jail following his arrest.
The death sentence can be executed any day between April 21 and 28, according to the lawyer Mosharraf Hossain Kazol, one of the lawyers for the state in the Bangabandhu murder case.
Kazol said Majed had already lost the scope of appealing against the death sentence for him being a fugitive from justice. His only option to save his neck was the presidential clemency.
