Process underway to bring Tarique back: Quader

Senior Correspondent: Ruling Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has said that a legal process is underway to bring convicted BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman back home from London.

Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, remarked this after placing wreaths at the grave of Ivy Rahman at Banani graveyard in the capital on Saturday marking her 15th death anniversary.

He said “Proper initiatives have been taken by the government to bring Tarique Rahman back. We are trying to bring him back through legal and diplomatic means.”

August 24 is the death anniversary of Ivy Rahman, former president of Bangladesh Mahila Awami League and wife of late President M Zillur Rahman.

Central leaders of Awami League, advisory council and its associate bodies paid rich tributes to Ivy Rahman by placing wreaths at her grave.

Ivy Rahman, also former president of Bangladesh Mahila Samity, received grievous injuries during a grenade attack on an AL rally at Bangabandhu Avenue in the city on August 21 in 2004 and succumbed to her injuries on August 24.

A special court pronounced the verdict of a case filed over the attack on October 10, 2018. The court awarded death sentence to 19 people including former junior home minister Lutfuzzaman Babar and life imprisonment to 19 including ex-premier Khaleda Zia’s son Tarique Rahman in connection with the grenade attack.
