Regular court to hear Azharul’s review petition

The regular court will hear the review petition filed by convicted war criminal ATM Azharul Islam seeking for reconsideration of the Supreme Court verdict that upheld his death penalty for his involvement in genocide and crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

A virtual Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain passed the order on Monday.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam appealed for hearing on the petition. But the virtual court said the regular Appellate Division will hear the petition.

Convicted war criminal ATM Azharul Islam filed the review petition seeking for reconsideration of the Supreme Court verdict that upheld his death penalty for his involvement in genocide and crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

Advocate Shishir Manir, a defence lawyer for the Jamaat-e-Islami leader, filed the review petition with the division concerned on Sunday noon.

He said “The 23-page review petition contains 14 grounds for consideration of acquittal.”

Earlier, the Supreme Court released the full text of the verdict on March 25 this year, clearing the way for Azharul to move a petition seeking review of the verdict.
