Commission for ACC to be formed within short time

Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul has said that a commission will be formed within short time in a bid to speed up the activities of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The adviser said this while speaking at a programme at the Institute of Diploma Engineers’ Bangladesh in Dhaka on Monday. The programme was organised by the ACC, marking the International Anti-Corruption Day. 

Nazrul highlighted the prevalence of corruption during the last 15 years under the Awami League government.

Referring to a controversial statement by a former Prime Minister, he said, “How does a Prime Minister's peon claim to own Tk 400 crore and laugh about it during a press conference? The entire family was complicit in corruption. During Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, the ACC and judiciary became her subordinates.”
He emphasised the need for immediate reform and activation of the ACC to address past corruption effectively.

"Corruption became recognized ideology during the tenure of the past government. Corruption incidents were not brought to the book, rather the sense that corruption is bad and negative, got extinct," he said.

Dr Asif Nazrul further said BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia was sentenced to 10-year jail only due to procedural errors in the case.

Urging for upholding the glory of the sacrifice of the martyrs of 1971 and July-August mass uprising, the law adviser said our children gifted us new time sacrificing their blood, let us learn from them, let us use our conscience to stay away from corruption and respect their expectations.

ACC Secretary Khorsheda Yasmin presided over the programme. Executive Director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) and head of the ACC Reform Commission, Iftekharuzzaman, attended the event as a special guest.
