‘Robber’ killed in ‘gunfight’ with police

A suspected robber has been killed in a reported gunfight with police at Kesharpar of Senbag upazila in Noakhali.

The gunfight took place around 2.45am on Tuesday in Beercoat area.

The deceased was identified as Anowar Hossain Usuf, son of Abu Taher Prokash Oliullah at Purbo Lautali village under Begumganj upazila.
Three policemen were also injured in the gunfight.

According to police, a team of police conducted a drive at Jamidarhat area of Begumganj and arrested Usuf around 10pm. As per his confessional statement, police later conducted another drive to arrest his associates, police sources said. But, sensing the presence of police, they opened fire on the police officials, forcing them to fire back in self-defence that triggered the gunfight.

After the robbers fled the scene, the law enforcers took bullet-wounded Usuf from the spot. He was pronounced dead after being taken to Noakhali General Hospital where duty doctors declared him dead.

Police also recovered a foreign pistol, three rounds of bullets and some local weapons from the spot.
