Rohingya ladies being sent to Malaysia for marriage

Rohingya ladies, who were rescued after a trawler capsized in the Bay of Bengal in Cox's Bazar, said they were heading towards Malaysia to get married there.

“My cousin lives in Malaysia. I was being sent to there to marry him. Firstly, there was a plan to go Malaysia by plane. But the sea route was chosen as couple of trawlers already took many people there. That’s why we have tried to go Malaysia by sea route,” rescued Rohingya woman Nozuma Khatun, 20, said on Wednesday noon.

Another Zohra, 22, said, “Two brokers named Saiful and Syed Alam took Tk30,000 in a condition that they will sent her to Malaysia.”

In reply to another question, Zohra also said, “I am a poor orphan. I lost my parents. So, I tied to go Malaysia to get married. My cousin fixed a bright groom for me there.”

Teknaf police station officer-in-charge Prodip Kumar Das said, basically these women were going to Malaysia to get married. Rohingya youths who live in Malaysia, try to take Rohingya ladies to marry them.  

On Tuesday, Bangladesh Coast Guard (BGB), and Navy rescued 73 souls after a-Malaysia-bound trawler carrying Rohingyas capsized in the Bay of Bengal in Teknaf. At least 15 bodies were recovered.
