SSC examinee shot dead in Gopalganj clash

An SSC examinee was shot dead and at least 15 were injured during a clash between two groups of villagers over establishing dominion in Gopalganj Sadar upazila on Thursday morning.

The deceased Rony Hawladar (16), son of Anwar Hawladar, was a student of Bolakoir Ajharia High School in Gopalganj Sadar upazila.

Md Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station, said a clash ensued between followers of Azizur Sheikh and Yusuf Mollah Group at Banagram Purba Para around 9:30am over establishing dominion in the area.

At one point, Azizur Sheikh, a former member of Karpara Union Parishad, opened fire twice. One of the bullets hit Rony who was standing nearby and killed him on the spot, the OC said.

At least 15 people from both the sides were injured in this connection, he added.

The injured were taken to Gopalganj General Hospital for treatment while Rony’s body was sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy.

Additional police were deployed in the area to tackle the situation created following the clash, he said.
