Student killing: 3 sentenced to death, 7 to life in prison

Kishoreganj Correspondent: A court in Kishoreganj has sentenced three people to death and seven others to life in prison for killing former Jahangirnagar University student Ershadul Islam Choyon in 2005.

Judge Muhammad Abdur Rahim of Kishoreganj’s First Additional District and Sessions Court came up with the verdict on Wednesday.

Death-row convicts are – Abdul Awal, Al-Amin and Sufol Mia. Awal and Sufol are absconding.

The lifers are – Abdul Karim, Safia Khatun, Abdul Kadir, Sohel, Ripa Akter, Johura Khatun alias Anufa, and Abdur Rauf Fakir alias Rup Mia.

Choyon, who studied management from Jahangirnagar University, was the only son of Jahirul Islam and Momena Khatun. He was killed following previous enmity on December 2, 2005, two days before he was scheduled to join as station master at the railways.

The attack occurred in Hossainpur Upazila’s Tansidla village. The convicts attacked Choyon’s house in broad daylight with sharp weapons. He was stabbed and slashed when he tried to protect his mother and sister during the attack, according to case details.

Doctors at Hossainpur Upazila Hospital declared him dead when he was taken there.

Choyon’s father Jahirul Islam filed a case against 11 persons with Hossainpur police on the night of the incident. Police pressed charges against 11 persons on February 28 the next year.

One of the accused was dropped from the chargesheet after his death during trial proceedings.

Choyon’s parents have expressed satisfaction over the verdict.
