Surma River flowing 70cm above danger level

Due to flash floods triggered by heavy rains, river waters in Sunamganj continued to rise which have inundated Sunamganj town and 11 upazilas of the district, rendering thousands of people trapped in water.

The Surma River was flowing 70cm above the danger level at 9am on Sunday (June 28) which is feared to increase more until Monday (June 29), according to officials associated with Sunamganj Water Development Board (WDB).

According to sources at Sunamganj Water Development Board (WDB) and district administration, flood situation has been created as 495mm rain was recorded in 72 hours in Cherapujni and Meghalaya of India and the Surma River was flowing 70cm above the danger level at 9am on Sunday.

Flood water continued rising in Nabinagar, Soloshahar, Kajir point, Ukil para, Boropata, Tegharia, Sahebbabir ghat, Bihari point, Sultanpur, Purbo o Poschimpara and other areas in the district town.

Road communications on Sunamganj-Bishwambharpur road,Tahirpur-Anwarpur, Sunamganj-Ambari, and Sunamganj-Doarabazar road were interrupted while some villages of Dharmapasha upazila’s Chamardi union went under knee-deep water.

Confirming the matter to risingbd, Sobibur Rahman, executive engineer, Sunamganj Water Development Board (WDB), said flood situation has been created in Sunamganj due to heavy rain in Meghalaya and Cherapujni of India.

There is a possibility to come down water level in Sunamganj after Monday, the Met office said.
