Tk 30cr transacted illegally at Mongla-Burimari port

Staff Correspondent: Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has claimed that an illegal transaction of Tk 30 crore is done in a year in name of rendering services at Mongla port and Burimari land port.

Corruption in the two ports has taken an institutional form, the German-based organization also claimed.

At a press conference held in city’s Dhanmondi Midas center on Sunday, TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman published a report titled “Burimari Land Port & Customs Station and Mongla Port & Custom House: Governance Challenges in Import-Export and Way Out”.

The TIB executive director said, “There is no country in the world where corruption has stopped. But corrupt people have been given punishment in those countries. Our country also needs such instance."

The study found that an amount of Tk 20.30 crore was illegally transacted at Mongla port and Customs House at the port. Of the amount, employees of Customs House at the Mongla port were involved with corruption worth Tk 15.69 crore in 2016-17 fiscal.

TIB also found corruption worth Tk 4.61 crore conducted by Mongla port authorities during the same period.

On the other hand, more than Tk 10 crore was transacted illegally at Burimari land port during the same period, TIB found.
